So yesterday at about 5pm, Julia had another seizure (two or three actually) while she and I were at the JP library. She has been fighting an icky case of pink eye and was a bit tired and was asking me to carry her around. Well she was pretty lethargic and halfway through the stacks she asked to lie down. I put her on the floor and she began to have heaving convulsions in her chest area (not full body ones like last time). I seriously thought she was just going to throw up, I did NOT think she was having a seizure. But her eyes were open and focusing on something I can only guess at. She was unresponsive and lacked muscle tone. I held her for at least 2-3 minutes while she was seizing (I sitll was unsure what was going on). When it appeared that she was no longer shaking, I stood up and asked if she was OK and she mustered up what seemed like a lot of energy to whisper "OK mom" to me. I was petrified. All of her previous seizures were NOT like this at all.
I brought her up to the check out desk and just a I lay her on the desk, she began to have another seizure. This time, though, her eyes closed and she was completely rigid and was clenching her jaw. The library staff were WONDERFUL and called 911 and Dwayne (who was home with Elena) for me. After Julia's second seizure, she went limp as she normally does after an attack and began to flutter her eyes just as the paramedics arrived.
She woke up a bit in the ambulance ride but about halfway there she had what seemed to be another mini seizure (some convulsions, losing focus but keeping eyes open) but it only lasted 15-20 seconds. She seemed more tired after that last attack so we were quiet for the rest of the ride there. Once we got to the hospital (we went to the U of A Peds ER) she fell asleep and the nurses and doctors had a very difficult time rousing her. They ending up pinching her shoulders (hello Vulcan death grip) and rubbing their knuckles along her breastbone while holding her upright. Even then, she didnt really want to wake up. Her temperature was 39 degrees. They kept her for observation for 3 hours and then sent us home. (Dwayne and Elena took a cab to the library and then drove the car to the hospital.)
They said that it was a febrile seizure again (probably caused by the pink eye??) and wouldnt do any more testing on her unless she had another one in 24-36 hours. I am a bit in shock, I think the adrenaline has seeped away and I am a bit concerned that they have brushed it off so easily. I dont know what else to do and I go back to work on Monday. This was supposed to be my fun week with the kids and it has become this.
Anyway, we were supposed to go out all day tomorrow but now we will be home recouperating and getting over the shock of it all.
I seriously thought I was all done with this part of her childhood :(
