Thoughts on Clutter

How do you decide what types of things you need to last a month of living?

This should be an easy, no-brainer kind of thing. I mean, we only need to have four plates, maybe four bowls, some glasses, a couple of pots, some selected spices that we use most often. And the rest should be cake to pack up, right? Well, why then am I second guessing how many bowls I might need to have on hand, just in case? Just in case what? Just in case I have a huge party with thirteen kids of casseroles? I know, I know, I'm exaggerating but still, its a bit ridiculous. Actually, more than anything it brings home the fact that we often live a more extravagant lifestyle thn we really need to. We could get by with so many fewer things.

I have outgrown most of my pants already and it doesnt seem to be TOO much of a hassle to only have thre or four pairs to choose from, while I am in that "in-between" stage--too big for my "normal" clothesd, too small yet for "real" pregnancy garb. Still, I suppose it really comes down to the fact that it is comforting that as close as we are toeing the poverty line (and by all financial calculations, we are well under it) we can still afford to have the illusion of relative material comfort.

I suppose that is, in part, why I have been holding all this clutter so close. Somehow feeling like I am warding off the dull reality of impending poverty and that having "stuff" will porve to the outsiders looking in that I have a life that is filled with material wealth--books that hold knowledge, computers that open doors to the great beyond, and on and on. Or maybe I am just reading too much into the whole thing and I should take more breaks from packing.

Onwards.
